Should I junk the MX5 Mazda Miata?
Two Boomboxes asked:
There is oil and water mixed in the oil pan. The milkshake and the engine starts up but runs very rough when idle. I think the head is messed up.

I have owned the MX5 for a few years and it has run excellent until now. It is the basic MX-5–no AC, needs paint. The car, when running was worth 1600.00. The mechanic says I need to get the head fixed which would cost around 900.00. Need advice—-should I sell the car for parts/junk it or get the motor fixed? Is an engine swap an option?
I own a few cars, and I drive the Miata to save gas and because it can be a fun drive. Don't really want to get rid of it. If I do, I may look for another.
Any advice would be helpful. Junk it or get it fixed?
PS It is a 92 Miata with 112,000 miles.

Well the mechanic clearly bsed you. A head gasket is under 50$ and you can find a used head for cheap as well. If the junyard head has carbon build up on the lip you can go to a machine shopand they will smooth it out for you. I doubt you will pay over 400$ with this method. If your chain snapped and your valves damaged the piston crowns then 900$ sounds reasonable.

I would get it fixed. I recently sold my '94 protege and it needed a head gasket I was told the same thing that it would cost around $900 it only cost the person who bought it $50 for the gasket and $50 to put it in. If it ever happens to my 2000 protege I will get it fixed this time.

Well I would go for a new one.
Look there under used cars. For 2000 you can find car with less than 112k miles for sure.
Take care.
