I am trying to turn my mileage on my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport back 80 miles. Not for re-selling/illegal junk?
Emily Kate. asked:
I am in college and my mom ridiculously decided she could ground me from my car even though I live 45 minutes away! But as any silly rebellious college student would do, I didn't listen and I drove it. Now she gave the car back even though she never physically took it. And she wants me to drive home this weekend and do family stuff, and the mileage needs to be 80 miles less. Is there any way to turn it back?

I've heard that driving backwards works but that may be urban legend and maybe I'm a little too gullible. Any suggestions would be helpful or just some advice on the situation and how to approach it with my strict over-bearing mother?!
Thanks!
P.S. it's an electronic speedometer so I don't think I can just unscrew it and use a drill to turn it back

not going to happen !! you could tell her you had a few errands to run …… or you helped a friend move to a new house– a few trips back and forth.. no harm no foul… you will not be able to rewind the milage. forget it and think of a good excuse.. you're a college student– they teach you how to lie… use it while you can..

Driving backwards WON'T turn the mileage back; Ferris Bueller already tried that one! There is no easy or simple way to do it; definitely not worth the money. I'd try and just avoid having her find out. Is she seriously going to check the mileage on your Jeep?!? Can she possibly have forgotten what the original mileage was before grounding (or can you argue that she somehow got her numbers mixed up?).
Here are some long-shots: is your college in the mountains? …cause then you could just pop it into neutral and coast on down home without adding miles to the car.. (or find some other way to tow it home without adding miles, to make up the difference).
what about leaving an hour late to go home, and when you get there, tell your mom you got lost or took the wrong freeway?
maybe some emergency? Your roommate's friend needed to go to the hospital, and you were nice enough to drive?
or be all smart-alecky and say you were grounded from driving, so you let a friend do all the driving!
I really think that lying is a bad way to go, though!! If you are forced to bring up the issue, obscuring or arguing would be better. Seriously, though, what's the worst thing she could do? So you drove a little bit; you're in college, living on your own, and you needed to run errands and get groceries. So what? Hopefully, she can understand that… you are a little too old to be getting yelled at by your mom!! Especially over what? $20 worth of gas? It's not worth her effort to yell at you; hopefully, you already learned whatever lesson she was trying to get across by taking away your car.

Tell her that on the FRIDAY before the weekend, your friend locked their keys in the house, so you had to give them a lift to their parents house (40 miles away) so they could get their spares.
Will make you a good Samaritan, and you don't have to stuff your cars dash!

I think there's another part to this story we're not being told. When you say it's 'your' car, is it really your mothers car?
