How does one replace a car key?

I own a 97 Mustang covertible and I have looked EVERY WHERE for these keys and after a week of searching, I cannot find it. The car continues to sit in the front driveway and I need it moved. I cannot take it out of Park without the key to it.
First, how much does a new car key cost for a car? If too much, I will just sell it to the local junk yard. It's a nice car, but I cannot afford over $200 to rekey it.

You need to bring the car to your it's dealer since that is the only place that can do it.

call the local Ford dealership and ask. i wouldn't think it would cost $200.

If you own the car, take down the VIN and go to the local Ford dealer. They will cut a new key for you. When Dodge cut my key, it was $7.00 which is a lot compared to the hardware store that will do it for $3.00, but that's loads less than having a locksmith come out to cut the keys for you on site.

Go to any Ford dealership and tell them you lost your key. Write down you VIN# and bring the title of your car to the dealer with you.
They should send away for a key to be remade for you. I think it costs like 20 bucks and u gotta wait a week. But you dont have to junk the car, geez.

Go online to the manufacturer and see if you can buy a key from them, then when you get one, take it to wal-mart or autozone and get 2 more keys cut so that you have back ups in case you lose it again.

Take the Vin # Vehicle Identification Number.It's the metal tag on the dashboard on the drivers side at the base of the window,to your local Ford Dealership w/ proof that you own the car.They can make a new one for you.

Go to the ford dealership with your VIN number, it is on a little metal plate on your dash. Ask them how much it will cost to get a new key made and sent to you. You may need to show proof of title before they will give you a key. I don't know for sure that Ford will do this for you, but I was able to get Nissan to do it for me a few years ago, the new key only cost like $20 bucks.

Call the company (Manufacurer, not the DEALER) that makes the car. You should be able to find a toll free number on any one website. Look for contact us. They can replace the key as cheaply as possible. If it is not a luxury car, you should have no problem. Keep in mind, if your name is not on the title, you wont get the key.

Like the others were saying you will need to take the VIN number to the dealer and they should be able to physically cut the key. The trick is that most Fords use an anti theft system that requires special electronic keys. Not only will you have to pay for the key and having it cut but you may have to pay to have the key programmed for the car. When they did my Ford truck it was easy because I had a spare key to activate the system which reprogrammed the new key. You may wind up having to have the car towed to the dealer so they can get into the computer to access the security. Not 100 percent sure about this on a 97. Definately won't have to junk the car but might run you anywhere from $50 to $175.

The key should not be more than 10 bucks at the dealership. Just make sure you have your driver's liscense and car registration when you ask for the key.
