Dealer won't let me take car off lot for inspection. Says mechanic has to come to lot, but?

That is a huge red flag. I would go somehwere else.

rebel the shops around the dealer have probably been brought by the dealer so you may as well take it further away for inspection.

If the the dealer won't let you have it inspected I would find another dealer. Also do they go along for the test drive? If not I would have the inspection done during the test drive. I would not even mention an inspection until it was already done with paperwork in hand. And I would talk to family and friends about reputable shops in your area that have experience in this area. But the best advice is walk away if they have a problem for someone esle going over their cars. It probably means they have something to hide.
