Can I sell an abandoned vehicle to a junk yard?
Are you kidding me? asked:
An employee left his car at my business a few years back and has made no attempts to get the car. I doubt the car runs at all and there are no keys. The guy no longer lives in this country and from what the other employees tell me he has no plans to come back to NJ. My question is can I just tow the car to the junk yard and scrap it or would I have to go to MVC an obtain a title first? I live in NJ by the way.
I found this right from the NJ MVC website that explains how to get a title for an abandoned vehicle.
How to obtain to title an abandoned vehicle
If you want to claim ownership and title an abandoned vehicle, you must request an application packet from the Special Title Section at an MVC Agency. You must state whether the vehicle was found on public or private property.

In order to operate an abandoned vehicle on New Jersey roads, it must first pass a state inspection process.
If you own a repair facility and a vehicle was abandoned on your property, you may have it removed and stored or you may sell it at a public or private sale.

in NJ, you cannot do either one.
You can call a licensed tow and impound yard, and have it removed, though. They will do the necessary paperwork, file abandon notices, and file for a lien sale with the DMV. They will be required to send legal notices to the last owner of record. When he does not respond, they are legally allowed to file an abandon lien, then sell the car at public auction.
The bad news for you is that you cannot profit from this. The good news is that it will not cost you anything to get it out of there.
edit: What you have found from the NJ DMV may not pertain to you. If so, then I stand corrected. Good job doing the research

Its been abandoned on your property. Find out how long the car has to be left there before it is yours or your responsibilities. If you want it off your property just put it out in the street and call the city. They will keep it till they get a hold of him and charge him with any tow bill or scrap it themselves. I would call a salvage yard to see if they will get it. Allot of them have a form you can fill out that releases you of any liabilities!

Some junk yards around me advertise that they buy cars without the title. You just have to swear you are the owner.
In your case, I would do it as theres not really any downside. You COULD get an abandoned title if you wanted to do the work.

Put it on craigslist. Say no title. I bet you come out ahead than paying to tow it to a junkyard.
For cars worth under $200 its really not that uncommon that they are sold without titles.
Dealer only auctions actually sell a few that way.
Think about it. How many people are going to deal in stolen cars worth less than $200 ?
