To say that all American cars are crap is a bit of a generalization. But it raises a good point. Many people PERCEIVE American cars as crap so they buy foreign made. Perception is important in the car business. Although some American companies have had problems with reliability in the past, so have many foreign brands as well. Mercedes has not been relevant in this regard for years, (I drive one myself and can attest to this.)
I used to work at a Pontiac dealership a couple of years ago and I loved some of the cars. The GTO was a fun car, but marketed completely wrong and never really took off here in the US. The G6 was a decent sedan but people had been turned off the Pontiac brand after several years of pretty bad cars, especially in the 90s.
Ford has some pretty decent cars as well. They are the only American car company that did not receive federal bailout money and for good reason. They were smart about their cars in a lot of ways. Their cars were not always the best, but they were priced right, looked good and sold well.
I also worked at a Chrysler and Jeep dealer. Of all the American companies they are the ones I worry about the most, they had some serious problems. I remember test driving the new Jeeps and thinking that they were asking way too much for the quality they were putting out. I used to **** even grabbing the handle over the door in the passengers seat when I took it out on test drives because the plastic felt so cheap. But the Chrysler 300 was a fine car.
There are many foreign companies making cars in America now though. Here is a partial list:
Mercedes ML
BMW X5
BMW X6
BMW Z4
BMW Z3
Toyota Tundra
Toyota Camry (Some Camrys, not all)
Honda Pilot (Some, not all)
That is just off the top of my head. Honda makes a bunch of cars in Canada as well. So American made cars can be good, but the damage done to the reputation of these companies is huge, so it will take time for people to come back to them.

not all, in fact some have just a little bit more than some import now most in terms of miles per gallon, and the reason to buy american is because if you are an american and live in the U.S you want your money to circulate in the U.S

If an 11 year old Mustang running at 155,000 miles with no problems whatsoever, and has never had any major repairs, means the car is crap, then I guess so.
PS the Accord I once stupidly bought needed a new engine and transmission by the time it got to 150,000.
PS #2: I work for a warranty company, we get waaay more claims for BMW's, Audi, Porsche, etc than for Fords and Chevy. At least when American cars do break, the parts and labor is much cheaper than with import brands. Price a transmission replacement for a Ford and a BMW if you don't believe me, tell me which one costs more.

Most? Yes, All? No, definitely not. Believe it or not, america used to build some very good cars, years ago. And although in the last 20 years or so they have, as a whole, gone down hill, there are still a select few that are great, and a handful that are at least not crap.
Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Aura, Ford Fusion, Pontiac G8, Chevrolette Corvette, Cadillac CTS are a few current cars made by american companies that are extremely solid vehicles, some beating out thier foreign competitors in quailty.
Dont get me wrong though, I drive a Honda Accord, LOL.

No.
It's just not all cars are created equal. GMC, Chevy, etc has made some great engines over the years. They just haven't always kept them in production ( for whatever reason ) .
Buicks for example have amazing motors in them from what I've seen.

American cars used to be good, when they were metal, so they became classics, but now they are unreliable and are just now trying to boost efficiency, when Japanese cars have been efficient for ages

Well we Australians gave you the chance to have the Commodore and what did you do? Give it to Pontiac to make instead of Chevrolet where it would have been a hell of a lot more popular. And now look, GM is bankrupt and isn't planning on returning the favour by allowing us the Camaro SS which is a breath of fresh air to all this Holden and Ford V8 Supercar drivel.
To me it's not the cars that are junk, its just that the people making them don't really tend to know what they're doing. Nor did Chevrolet really see the repercussions of buying out Daewoo and rebadging their cars for the American market.
Ford is the one that has done it right, considering that they're still producing Boss 315 V8s for the Falcon XR8s and turbocharged 5L V6s for the FPV F6 whereas Holden's now gone to the frugal comes first Plan B mode where they just rebadge Korean cars (Holden/Chevrolet Cruze anyone? It's just a Daewoo Lacetti), and make gutless V6 engines which still don't provide much more frugality than the V6s they currently have!
So GM here's a tip: Want a good small car? Ask the Germans to make one for you. Ford did, and look at how well they're doing.
And P.S. chuckles, your 2004 Focus is doing brilliantly because it's one of the aforementioned German engineered cars. The Fiesta is the other. Both brilliant cars, relatively cheap, and best-sellers in their respective markets.

You are still stuck in the 70s when they did indeed make crap.
I have only owned one non-American car. And that Miata gave just as much trouble as my other cars. I just gave my 1988 Dodge Aries to an unemployed friend but it was still running great. My 2004 Focus is trouble free and my daughter's 2005 Cavalier close to it.
Buick and Cadillac are now tied with Lexus for new car quality.
